Gunsmithing Schools – AGI Gunsmithing
Gunsmithing involves repairing, modifying, building, and designing firearms. Those who wish to become gunsmiths have to develop certain skills of a mechanic, artisan, woodworker, and metalworker, and they have to possess profound knowledge of ballistics, chemistry, and shop mathematics. Also, they need to be able to work meticulously and accurately. Since gunsmithing requires such a wide range of skills and knowledge, many gunsmiths choose to specialize in just a few skills or types of firearms. Here are some of the top gunsmithing schools.
Yavapai Gunsmithing School
The Yavapai College Gunsmithing School offers journeyman gunsmithing certificate programs and a gunsmithing associate degree. A large part of the degree program in this school involves practical lessons in gunsmithing, and students will spend a lot of time working in the machine shop. Most students take four semesters to complete the program. They will be taught how to make stocks, re-barrel guns, refinish metals, and much more. The gunsmithing certificate program will teach students skills that are required for careers in gunsmith shops, such as technical math, entrepreneurship, and apprentice and journeyman gunsmithing. Students in both programs will also learn how to assemble, disassemble, and modify handguns, rifles, and shotguns.

Pennsylvania Gunsmith School
Those who wish to obtain a master degree in gunsmithing can go to the Pennsylvania Gunsmith School. This school’s master gunsmithing program was meticulously developed over a period of 60 years by employers and professional gunsmiths to give students complete gunsmithing training. It requires a total of 16 months to complete, and it prepares students for entry-level gunsmithing jobs. Some of the skills that are taught in this program include firearm assembly and disassembly, repairing, customizing, custom stockmaking, stock bedding, checkering, welding, chambering, polishing, and others.

American Gunsmithing Institute
The American Gunsmithing Institute, or AGI, offers instructional videos on many different aspects of gunsmithing, including building guns, restorations, metalwork, reloading, pillar bedding, cleaning, hunting, shooting technique, finishes, optics, triggers, and others. Students can also learn about all sorts of firearms, such as handguns, rifles, shotguns, glock pistols, cowboy guns, armory guns, and AR-15. The courses are conducted by qualified instructors who have extensive experience in the field of gunsmithing. AGI uses the latest video technology and many different cutaway guns to help students understand the mechanisms that are found inside the weapons.

After graduating from a gunsmithing school, gunsmiths can seek employment in firearms factories, military or police armories, gunsmith shops, or sporting goods stores. Those who wish to specialize in a certain area of gunsmithing can become a custom firearms designer or builder, stockmaker, finisher, checkerer, engraver, pistolsmith, and others.
