All About Hunting – Turkey, Hog, Elk, Bear & Goose
To be a successful hunter, one needs to have the right equipment as well as good hunting skills. They also need to understand the behavior of the animals they are hunting, so that they can track them effectively and get a clear shot on them.
Turkey
Turkeys are usually found in rocky areas with hills and caves. They can also be seen in trees, woods, and fields, especially cornfields. It is important for hunters to dress in camouflage from head to toe, because turkeys have very good eyesight, and they can easily spot unnatural movements. Early spring is the mating time for turkeys, and hunters can use a variety of turkey calls to attract male turkeys. Weapons that are commonly used for hunting turkeys are rifles, shotguns, and bows.
Hog
Hogs can appear anywhere in the woods, but prefer to go to places where there is water and thick cover. Corn can be used as bait for hogs. Hogs may not be able to see things very well, but they have an excellent sense of smell. Hunters should be facing the wind when they are approaching their target, so that their sent does not alert the prey. Those who are using rifles to hunt hogs should keep a distance of at least 75 yards from their targets.
Elk
Elk are one of the most hunted animals in the United States. Although they are big animals, they can be very elusive, and finding them is one of the major challenges of elk hunting. Some of the best places to locate elk are ridges that are situated close to secluded meadows, creeks, and watering holes. Hunters can use a rifle or a bow to shoot hunt elk.
Bear
Bears reside in the forest, where there is an abundance of shrubs, and fruit and nut trees. Hunters have to move stealthily when they are stalking a bear, and they have to apply scent cover to mask their scent. When shooting a bear, they should take time to aim for a vital organ, because a bear can disappear quickly if it is not killed or seriously wounded by the first shot.
Goose
Hunters can find geese around large bodies of water, or nearby cereal or cornfields where they feed. It is necessary to build a blind, because geese can be easily scared away. A goose decoy or a goose call can be used to draw the geese to within shooting distance. The best weapon for goose hunting is a 10 or 12-gauge shotgun.
